Q: ‘Those Lucky Scoundrels’ says my units are charmed if either player takes 2 consecutive turns. Does it trigger when I take the double turn as well?
A: Yes.
Q: ‘Nimble’ lets the Cover terrain ability apply to a unit that charged. Is that only the Cover from Nimble’s own 1", or Cover from any source (e.g. ‘Glamour Shroud’ or ‘Thorny Defence’)?
A: Any source. The second sentence applies while the unit is affected by the Cover terrain ability, however it came to be.
Q: A BAREFOOT unit is within 6" of a Spectral Briar Hedge (attacks against it fail on unmodified hit rolls of 1–3) and also has ‘Nimble’ (fail on 1–2). Do those combine?
A: No further effect – an attack that fails on 1–3 already fails on 1–2. Both are checked against the unmodified hit roll.
Q: My 10-model unit has exactly 5 models left. Is it hangry?
A: Yes – 5 is “half or fewer”. A single-model unit with a Health characteristic of 10 is hangry from its 5th damage point.
Q: For ‘One Root, Many Stems’, does the attacking unit count itself?
A: Yes, if it is within the target’s combat range – it is a friendly GNOMAD unit. A unit shooting from outside the target’s combat range does not count itself but still receives the effect if enough other friendly units are within it.
Q: ‘Double or Nothing’, ‘Nettle Storm’, ‘Foot the Quarry’ and being hangry each “add 1 to the number of friendly GNOMAD units counted”. Do they all stack?
A: Yes. They change the number counted, not a dice roll, so they are not roll modifiers and each applies. A hangry unit only adds 1 when it is the unit attacking, so a hangry unit attacking with one other friendly unit also within the target’s combat range, in a Reckless Trekkers double turn, is a count of 4.
Q: Are the +1 to hit rolls and +1 to wound rolls from ‘One Root, Many Stems’ modifiers that count towards the cap alongside ‘All-out Attack’?
A: Yes. All modifiers to a hit roll are added together and capped at +1, and the same is done separately for the wound roll (17.1). ‘One Root’ and ‘All-out Attack’ together still give +1 to hit; the +1 to wound is a separate roll and applies in full.
Q: ‘Go With Your Gut’ must be used before any units have been deployed. Can I deploy my Gastrognome Encampment first?
A: Yes – a terrain feature is not a unit.
Q: ‘Cock-a-doodle-doo!’ gives the Breakfast effect to units that already have Lunch from ‘Go With Your Gut’. Do they have both?
A: Yes. “Only 1 of these effects can apply to the same unit at the same time unless specified otherwise” – ‘Cock-a-doodle-doo!’, ‘Waste Not, Want Not’ and ‘Please, Sir, May I Have Some More?’ each specify otherwise.
Q: My meal is Breakfast and my Trail Master’s ‘Cock-a-doodle-doo!’ also gives Breakfast. Do my units add 2 to run rolls and charge rolls?
A: No. A unit is either affected by the ‘Breakfast’ effect or it is not; being given the same effect twice does not apply it twice.
Q: I use ‘All Together Now’ and roll a 1. Do I still resolve ‘Activate Place of Power’?
A: No. ‘All Together Now’ replaces the effect of ‘Activate Place of Power’ whatever you roll – on a 1 your HERO suffers D3 mortal damage and nothing else happens.
Q: ‘Instinct for Ruin’ lets enemy MONSTERS use ‘Tear the Weave’. Does that use up their RAMPAGE for the turn?
A: Yes – ‘Tear the Weave’ has the RAMPAGE keyword and can only be declared by a MONSTER that has not used a RAMPAGE ability this turn.
Q: Can guardian tokens be placed on my opponent’s faction terrain? On my own Encampment?
A: No to both. ‘Rouse the Guardians’ allows them only on non-FACTION TERRAIN terrain features.
Q: A terrain feature already has 3 guardian tokens and I cast ‘Humble Plea’ on it. What happens?
A: The spell is cast but the token cannot be given – 3 is the maximum (5 in a Gnomiad Trail army).
Q: A LeyLord returned by ‘Uproot in Anger’ has 10 damage points allocated to it. Is it Battle Damaged straight away?
A: Yes – it has 10 or more damage points. With ‘Deep Roots’ you can remove up to 2 more tokens to reduce that to 5 or 0.
Q: Can a Spirit of Ghyran be returned by ‘Uproot in Anger’?
A: Yes – it is a non-HERO OLDGROWTH unit. It returns with 10 damage points (4 Health remaining), or, with ‘Deep Roots’, 5 if you remove four tokens and none if you remove five. Owain’jax and Grove-Sworn heroes cannot be returned (HERO).
Q: Two of my LeyLords have been destroyed. Can both come back?
A: Yes, but not in the same turn – ‘Uproot in Anger’ is Once Per Turn (Army). Each unit can only be replaced once (24.2).
Q: ‘Gift of the Gab’ gives me an extra condiment of war. Can I give it to a HERO who already has one?
A: No – a unit cannot have more than 1 enhancement of the same type (General’s Handbook, Army Composition 4.1).
Q: ‘Bog-Bound Misanthrope’ says my HERO counts as being within the combat range of enemy units within 9". Is he in combat with them? Can he still shoot?
A: No, and yes. The trait applies “for the purposes of the ‘One Root, Many Stems’ ability” only.
Q: Can my own WIZARD cast ‘Auspicious Tidings’ on the bearer of the Nullbark Shield?
A: No. The bearer cannot be picked as the target of any SPELL ability, friendly or enemy. Spells that do not pick it as a target still affect it.
Q: ‘Nuffle’s Chosen’ makes the Halfloaf Thief charmed (Ward (6+)) and he already has Ward (6+) on his warscroll. Does he have two wards?
A: No – a unit only ever uses one ward, the one with the lowest value. The two are the same value.
Q: My Soulwake Herders are charmed, the meal is Dinner and they are wholly within 6" of a Place of Power. What is their ward?
A: Ward (5+) from ‘Guiding Light’, because the unit already has Ward (6+), and Dinner adds 1 to the ward roll, so it succeeds on a 4+. There is no cap on modifiers to ward rolls (17.1 caps hit, wound and save rolls only). A charmed Trail Master in the same position that charged this turn adds a further 1 (‘Fortune Favours the Brave’), so 3+.
Q: Does ‘Benign Landscape’ extend ‘Glamour Shroud’ (9" from the War-Wagon) or ‘One Branch, Many Leaves’?
A: No. It only extends distances measured from the target terrain feature – ‘Nimble’ (1" to 4"), ‘Activate Place of Power’ (3" to 6"), ‘Guiding Light’ (6" to 9"), ‘All Together Now’ and ‘Living Herbarium’. Distances measured from a unit or model are unaffected.
Q: ‘Benign Landscape’ is UNLIMITED. If I cast it twice on the same terrain feature, is that +6"?
A: Yes – “This effect is cumulative.”
Q: ‘The Soil Settles Its Debts’ gives a guardian token and then inflicts mortal damage equal to the number of tokens. Does the token it just gave count?
A: Yes – the token is given first, then the count is taken. Note the token is only given if the target has no friendly guardian token; if it already has some, none is added and the existing tokens are counted.
Q: ‘Please, Sir, May I Have Some More?’ – can I pick the meal my army already has?
A: You can, but the unit is already affected by that effect and gains nothing further.
Q: Does ‘One Root, Many Stems’ apply to Companion weapons (e.g. the Wattlecrest’s beak, the Crag Ibex’s horns, a Gryph-hound’s claws)?
A: Not on its own – Companion weapons are not affected by friendly abilities unless the ability states that it affects Companion weapons (20.0). ‘One Tree, Many Branches’ states exactly that, so while the unit is within the Trail Master’s combat range they are.
Q: Yonella’s ‘Ghyran’s Embrace’ ignores modifiers to save rolls. Does that include friendly ones such as ‘All-out Defence’?
A: Yes – positive and negative modifiers alike.
Q: Can Yonella’s ‘One Trunk, Many Rings’ copy a ROOTSONG ability from a HERO in reserve (e.g. a Halfloaf Thief in deep cover)?
A: No – the HERO must be on the battlefield.
Q: While a LeyLord is within Owain’jax’s combat range (‘One Forest, Many Trees’), does its own FIGHT ability trigger ‘One Root, Many Stems’?
A: Yes. For the purposes of that ability it is a friendly GNOMAD unit in every respect – it is counted, and its attacks receive the effects.
Q: ‘Sap of Kinship’ gives a unit the GNOMAD keyword. Does that make it hangry, charmed by ‘Those Lucky Scoundrels’, and so on?
A: Yes – every ability that applies to friendly GNOMAD units applies to it until the start of your next turn.
Q: My Halfloaf Thief declared battle round 4 for ‘Back for Breakfast’. What does ‘What a Guy!’ need?
A: The roll plus 4, so a 2+ succeeds – but an unmodified roll of 1 always fails.
Q: Can I choose not to use ‘Back for Breakfast’ in the declared battle round?
A: Yes – it is not a passive ability, so using it is your choice. However, it has no effect in any other battle round, so if you do not use it in the declared round, the Thief stays in deep cover and is destroyed at the start of the fifth battle round.
Q: The Halfloaf mission reward ‘How Come He’s Such a Genius? Don’t Ask Me!’ – if more than one enemy HERO has an artefact of power, who picks?
A: You do (“pick 1 enemy HERO”).
Q: ‘Warning Cry’ targets an enemy unit “set up this turn”. Does a unit deployed normally count in battle round 1?
A: No – deployment happens before the first turn. It means units set up during the current turn, e.g. from reserve or as a replacement unit.
Q: ‘One Hive, Many Bees’ arms my Drove Kin with Throwing Stones. Must they shoot them?
A: If they use a SHOOT ability, yes – a unit shoots with all of its ranged weapons (16.0). They cannot shoot while in combat (no Shoot in Combat).
Q: ‘Barbed Passage’ triggers when an enemy unit “ends a move within 6"”. Does a pile-in count?
A: Yes – the Core Rules state that pile-in moves are a type of move (Terrain 1.5), so a unit that ends a pile-in within 6" of the Hedge triggers it.
Q: ‘Groundswell’ says non-FLY INFANTRY or CAVALRY. Can I pick a FLY CAVALRY unit?
A: No – “non-FLY” applies to both (5.1).
Q: Units transported by ‘Ground Transport’ – can they shoot, and can they be set up in combat?
A: They can shoot. They cannot be set up in combat and cannot charge that turn (except a DROVER unit in a Blazed Trail army, which ‘Rollin’ Rollin’ Rollin’’ lets charge with one fewer dice, once per turn).
Q: Does the Head Chef’s ‘One Leaf, Many Veins’ make the Head Chef himself hangry?
A: Yes. The Head Chef is a friendly GNOMAD unit, and a unit is always within its own combat range.
Q: Both players took ‘The Hearth Held’. Can we both complete it?
A: Yes, in principle – each player checks at the end of their own turn in battle round 5, so if control of the hearth changes between those turns both can score it. As with any Domination battle tactic, each player must already have completed the Affray and Strike on that card, and a player who seized the initiative in that round cannot complete it.
Q: ‘The Wagons Drawn Close’ (3+) says slain models cannot be returned to enemy units within 3". Does that stop ‘Rally’?
A: Yes, for returning models – ‘Rally’ cannot return slain models to a unit while it is within 3". Rally points can still be spent to Heal (1) a wounded model in that unit.
Q: One scenery piece of my Gastrognome Encampment is demolished. Is the whole terrain feature demolished?
A: No – each scenery piece is demolished separately, and ‘The Wagons Drawn Close’ scales with the number of pieces left (with 2 pieces: Cover and Obscuring, no set-up bar).
Q: I’m playing an Army of Renown. Which of my abilities stop working?
A: In a Feral Trail Charcuteers army, ‘One Root, Many Stems’ is not used and the hangry condition has no effect, so six warscroll abilities do nothing: ‘One Tree, Many Branches’, ‘Put Up the Prey’, ‘Foot the Quarry’, ‘Many Hands Make Light Work’, ‘Nettle Storm’ and ‘One Leaf, Many Veins’. In a Blazed Trail Cauterisers army, ‘Go With Your Gut’ is not used, so ‘Cock-a-doodle-doo!’ does nothing (‘Waiting On’, ‘Waste Not, Want Not’ and the Leftovers abilities are on units that army cannot include). Everything else either uses the Army of Renown’s own version of the rule it references or is not in the army at all.
Q: Does a double turn still charm my army in an Army of Renown?
A: No. ‘Those Lucky Scoundrels’ is a battle trait of the main book, and both Armies of Renown use their own faction rules instead. Feral Trail units are charmed by ‘Charmed for Life’; Blazed Trail units by ‘Dumb Pluck’ and ‘Full Bellies’.
Q: Can I cast ‘The Soil Settles Its Debts’ in an Army of Renown?
A: Yes. It is on Yonella’s warscroll, so it is not one of the faction rules an Army of Renown replaces, and it gives the target its own guardian token before the count is taken. Without ‘Rouse the Guardians’ that will be the only token on the feature, so it inflicts 1 mortal damage on each enemy unit within 1".
Q: My unit is charmed by two different abilities and one of them stops applying. Is my unit still charmed?
A: Yes. Each ability’s effect lasts for as long as that ability says it does, and one ending does not end another’s. A Blazed Trail unit charmed by ‘Dumb Pluck’ and ‘Full Bellies’ that leaves the charging unit’s combat range is still charmed by ‘Full Bellies’ until the start of your next turn.
Q: Blazed Trail: ‘Full Bellies’ makes my unit charmed instead of hangry. Do I lose the ‘One Root’ +1?
A: Yes – ‘Fire in the Belly’ adds 1 only while the unit is hangry. You trade the +1 for the charm.
Q: Blazed Trail: is the Cock of the Walk worth taking for my Path to Glory hero?
A: Not for its meal abilities. ‘Go With Your Gut’ is not used in that army, so ‘Cock-a-doodle-doo!’ and ‘Thick Blood’ do nothing. ‘Short Flight’ and ‘Ruffled Feathers’ work as normal.
Q: Feral Trail: my Butcher gains the GNOMAD FEASTMASTERS keyword. Can he take the Cheeseknife of Ghur?
A: Yes – he is a HERO with the faction keyword. He cannot be your general.
Q: Feral Trail: ‘Nobody Eats Alone’ needs a friendly non-OGOR GNOMAD unit and a friendly OGOR unit within 12". Does my ogor unit count as the OGOR unit for itself?
A: Yes. A unit is always within range of itself, so an ogor unit is well-fed while a friendly non-OGOR GNOMAD unit is wholly within 12" of it, and a gnomad unit while a friendly OGOR unit is.
